Humorous Views on London Culture, Royals, Gossip and Politics

Hello, is that a Halo? - 26 February 2008
In Little America, sorry, Little Britain, it’s all Obama, Obama, Obama. The American election is
the news; the news is the American election. BBC has created a new news programme reporting
exclusively from the US. Now there’s an innovative idea. We may have missed Britney changing
her purse while we slept.
The ever pompous naturally right-wing Dominic Lawson, brother of often pompous and possibly
right-wing Nigella, has a note worthy column in the Independent on the cult of Obamania.
BO hopes to be “an instrument of God” and that “I am confident that we can create a Kingdom
right here on Earth.” The Republican religious right, or ‘Obamicans’ as anointed by BO, must be
swooning in theocratic rapture. The Bush Boy must be red-faced livid, stamping up and down in
his cowboy boots on the desk in the Oval Office. “NO, no, no! God talks to me! I am the
instrument of God and only me! He told me again last Tuesday!”
“My job is (to) be so persuasive that if there’s anybody left out there who is still not sure whether
they will vote, or is still not clear who (sic) they will vote for, that a light will shine through that
window, a beam of light will come down on you, you will experience an epiphany…you will
suddenly realise that you just go to the polls and vote for Obama.” Was BO taking a page from
Bush’s blank book: “It is no exaggeration to say that the undecided could go one or the other.”
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
BO is clearly clever and has thought out every move, manoeuvre, manipulation to propel him
from a junior Senator: “What’s the kickback from buying that house, Auchi?” to world domination:
“I am the Way, the Truth and the Light”. He is either practicing ultimate irony or he is a potential
fascist. The former an enigma, the latter the norm in the US. Either way, he keeps his opinions,
positions, ideology vague in order to amass increasing masses of devotees from all parties,
religions, genders, race. Shrewd.
With BO deficient in the more customary Baptist preacher background, he has created a
circuitous path to his presidential appointment through religious rhetoric. Interesting and evidently
effective and efficient.
I am not leaving anything to chance; I’m wearing my sunglasses day and night. Argh. The light!
The blinding light!
